The Naming Ceremony - Plateau Indians in Olden Times

For Kids

Kids were given a lot of different names as they were growing up. These names were based on their personality, as it developed, or on something that had happened – an event in their young life.

Their official name was given to them when they were about nine years old. That was usually the name of an ancestor.

There was a name ceremony that went along with their official name. The family had a feast and invited guests. Gifts were given, not to the child though. Gifts were given by the family to the guests.
