The Naming Ceremony - Plateau Indians in Olden Times

For Kids

Kids were given a lot of different names as they were growing up. These names were based on their personality, as it developed, or on something that had happened an event in their young life.

Their official name was given to them when they were about nine years old. That was usually the name of an ancestor.

There was a name ceremony that went along with their official name. The family had a feast and invited guests. Gifts were given, not to the child though. Gifts were given by the family to the guests.
